March 2024.

I truly enjoy working at a slow pace in the spring garden. Yes, there is a lot to do, but hey, I’m retired, right? I was talking to Cherie about a study showing how listening to bird sounds can very positively bring down blood pressure and it hit me- I LOVE the sounds of my garden. Since we truly live in a semi rural area, we have a lot of birds. And butterflies, bees, lizards etc. Occasionally we can hear traffic sounds or a small plane, but mostly it is birds and occasionally cattle or dogs barking.

Since we have had a wet winter again, with a lot more cloud cover than we have ever had, the winter garden is a bit behind the normal growth patterns. Even though we had the big oak on the south side of the garden removed (lots more sun) we just haven’t had a lot of sunny days. So several plants that should be ready to bolt and be removed are just coming into their own. I have started getting snow peas, and 2 rainbow chards, and three or four romaine. Hopefully by the time Matt and Jenny come this weekend, the cabbage will be ready for harvest too!

The other things that are doing their thing are the daffodils, tulips and freesia. Such uplifting color! The irises are thinking about flowering also.

The snow peas are sooo good when they are delicate and fresh!

Rainbow chard makes a nice splash of color in the winter garden!

Started planting the summer squash in among the winter plants!
