May 2024

This wasn’t a horrible drive but again, pretty boring. Nebraska to eastern Colorado just gets drier with fewer and fewer trees. Definitely the prairie minus any Prairie dogs. Since it is still spring, the grasses are green but we missed all the varieties of greens of the forested regions we’ve gone through these last 6 weeks! It has become very flat and unfortunately for Dave, pretty windy.

I have to say this campground was a miss. The only bad campground so far on the trip which is pretty good considering we have gone to so many new places. We will not be returning here. Start with the damn daily park pass per vehicle. We can understand it for TG since he is driving around, but Tut comes in and parks. Just add it to the camping cost! So $20/ day. Then we go down dusty dirt roads to the campsite and the lake is flat. No hills or anything around it. Get to our site near the bathroom, but this campground does not have an open bathroom. You have to drive to a different campground (down the damn dusty, potholed road) to use a bathroom. Not really a problem for us since we travel with our potty, but there were several tenting families! Now add the biggest problem – thousands of gnats and mosquitoes. Thousands. And eating them are hundreds of swifts. Flying everywhere around our campsite. Since we were right by the bathroom building, and the swifts were nesting in the overhangs, HUNDREDS of birds flying right around us. All the time. We didn’t end up doing anything outside at the campground. No picnic tablecloth, no stove, no BBQ….nada. Luckily we had electric so we could cook inside on the fry pan for dinner. We went out to breakfast and found a cute family cafe- Prairie House Restaurant- in Wiggins, Co. Young couple trying to keep this place going, and we dined with all the seniors in the town it seemed. Funny gossip they’re talking about! Tiny town. We had yogurt for breakfast the second day – Dave could not go outside to cook at all. If you know how we camp, we eat well! Bacon and eggs, or some such most days. We stayed inside and played Wingspan one afternoon because there was literally nothing to do. Boo…

Dave found the Pawnee Nature Reserve not too far from Jackson Lake so we took a drive. We found pronghorn a couple times and a prairie falcon plus lots of little tweety birds. And then we drove through the little towns around the region and they are mostly quite sad looking. Old buildings not maintained, with an occasional bar. But Fort Morgan was quite nice and we found an adorable park with a lake and some ponds, and some trails. So that is where we ended up hanging out. And a Walmart with groceries to restock. Pretty in a very drab place.

They didn’t seem to appreciate us stopping.
