Dried up corn fields for sure. After Dave and I spent quite a bit of time getting the sprinkler system all figured out so we could leave for 8 days, the hose kinked on us. Maybe a third of the water got through so the lower level of the garden did not make it. I poured water on them upon our return and it looks like the yellow squash plants made it. Two of four baby squash did shrivel up, but two are still going! And the watermelon and cantaloupe got water and are still growing like crazy.

First baby cantaloupe after I started hand fertilization. It is about the size of a tennis ball.

The green beans may also make it – although most of the leaves shriveled up, the stalks stayed green. New leaves are already forming. There was a group that get water from the normal tree sprinkler system so they did OK. Unfortunately, those are the beans the rat keeps eating! Grrr… The upper beans are just about to start producing and have a lot of flowers. They got plenty of water! And the flowers hung in there. I got my first sunflower of the year, in fact! Most of the sunflower plants have buds growing right now.

This is supposed to be white (Vanilla Ice) but apparently this plant did not get the memo.

So now I get to spend some time in the garden fixing up the messes and getting it ready for our long vacation. Hopefully the upper corn will ripen (it is full of tassels right now), and the watermelon will keep growing. The smoke and ash from the Caldor fire have darkened the skies but also dropped the temperatures. So there is that. We may never survive off my crops but they sure are relaxing and outright fun!

Mini corn cobs and the beans I was able to keep from the rat!

Not sure if it is just me, but the picture above reminds me of Grapes of Wrath!
