This time of year is one of transition – the old plants are being pulled out and new young plants are starting to grow. After the deer “feeding” mishap, the potatoes have some new leaves, the peas have continued to grow and the replacement broccoli, Brussel sprouts and lettuce continues to come up. In fact, it feels like every sunny day we get, the lettuce grows substantially! Just before I left for Nashville, I planted garlic and those are growing like crazy. They are pretty slow growing for the most part and will not be ready until spring!

I kept a few of the summer plants – the bell peppers are still ripening, the carrots are still growing (funny since they are shorty ones but they grow sooo slow) and there are some green beans that the deer missed. I have planted both snow peas (which we so love in the air fryer) and a small crop of regular snap peas. I really love the snap peas but it is a pain to get the peas out of the pod. I have the last little bit of frozen peas from last year left to add to our post-Thanksgiving soup next week. They are one of the very few green things I eat – green beans, peas and lettuce. The broccoli and B sprouts are for Dave and the kids. Hopefully we will get some sprouts this year. They like warmer weather, but not too warm. Last year it warmed up too quickly.

The flowers are continuing to bloom also for the most part. The deer really loved the four o’clocks and sunflowers so those are goners, and one lantana plant escaped also. It looks like the second lantana is starting to grow back from its exposure to the deer. It is very fortunate that most of our days are sunny – even though it is cold, the plants can keep going. After Thanksgiving, I will try to plant tulips again. All in all, I definitely LOVE my time in the garden. I am looking forward to getting the pool area i better shape this spring also. I have finished some of the pruning, and will work on the grass next!
