We had quite a bit of rain throughout January (about 40”) so the garden has not gotten much love. I have gone in a couple times to gather MANY dropped leaves and twigs/small branches from the surrounding trees. But most of it is in a fallow condition. But, the lettuces are growing, the broccoli is starting to produce and the peas are slowly growing up their respective lattices. And surprisingly, there are flowers starting or continuing to bloom.

I haven’t needed to buy lettuce for myself for a while now. I have 10 Romaine plants and one butter lettuce in full production. Gives me a decent salad almost every day. The celery is big enough to start pulling stalks once I eat what bought at Bel Air, although most of the stalks are still a little small. But definitely a rich, deep green unlike store bought varieties. Dave has eaten the primary broccoli balls already and the side broccolis are growing now. The leaves are HUGE and beautiful. The peas are chugging along, now tall enough for the trellis but so slow!! No flowers yet.

Then there were my strawberry pots. They mostly died during our fall trip because one of the drip waterers fell out of each pot (🤷♀️). so they did not get enough water and many of the plants died. I have been babying the survivors because they produce such amazing berries. But they look really ugly!

So I decided to see what was really there and went through cleaning out both pots. Many had died but I think the dead leaves somewhat protected many of them. I will fill in the holes with some bare root strawberries (I really like the Sequoia ones) but I have to say, it looks so much better already! It is still a little cold for them (mostly gets to the mid 50s during the day and low 30s at night) but I am hoping these plants will make it!
