Summer is the garden’s second best friend. I’d say water is its first friend. Photosynthesis requires water, sunlight and carbon dioxide. I guess my conversation with them all, entreating them to grow strong and make food provides the CO2!

I pulled the garlic out today. I’ve gone from raising micro garlic to mini garlic! But they have lots of cloves and smell great. I’ve also harvested the first 3 green beans. There are many more to come. I think we’ll get our first summer squash tomorrow and the first zucchini later this week. One of the plots of corn is in full tassel and the second is starting to grow them. So much fun!

20 garlic bulbs pulled up today

Other plants are also growing quickly. The cucumber plants have lots of flowers and tiny cucs, but the cantaloupe has only flowers and lots of vines. No fruit yet. The watermelon plants did survive the attack of the leaf eaters and are now growing long vines. No flowers yet but I still have hope we’ll get something before we leave in August!

Whoo hoo…watermelon is thriving!
The zucchini leaves are HUGE!
The biggest of the mini squash is ready to harvest
The green bean tendrils are almost 5 feet tall
Corn starting to make cobs!

And the flowers! We’ve transitioned from mostly bulbs to annuals and perennials . I have been struggling with a butterfly bush and lantana that were severely browsed by deer in 2020. They are both flowering now. One set of lilies planted in a tub is also continuing to bloom.

I love these flowers!
The Dianthus or sweet Williams enjoy the heat
The lantana is finally growing and flowering after 2 years

And lastly, the yummy, yummy strawberries. These are last year’s plants so very established and sweet. They bloomed all summer last year so I am hoping for the same this year. All in all a great time of year in the garden!
