Summertime on the Northern coast beaches is quite different from the SoCal beaches during the summer. Growing up, it was a strange day we couldn’t be on the beach in the sun. Almost any day of the year. And the Sonoma Coast beaches are great and sunny for the most part in the winter; but typically fairly gloomy in the summer. So it is a nice break for us weather wise. Just hard for me to wrap my head around!!
We got one of our favorite sites this time – site 7. We love the sites right on the beach. They can be windy and could be miserable in a tent, but with King Tut we are very comfortable there. The sites are just a berm away from the water! Ok… and 100 feet or so. And the beach is pretty rocky but these days we wear shoes anyway. We didn’t see any whales this time from our site, but we have in the past.

But, speaking of whales, we did actually see a Gray whale mom and calf while hiking at Bodega Head. It is pretty late in the season for them to be heading north so I was surprised to see the spouts! They were moving slow so the calf must be pretty young still. We also saw a male California quail perched in a bush (never saw that before) and a Blue Heron walking along the trail in the grass. And we saw a doe and 2 older fawns. We love that hike.

We also went and saw the Harbor seals at Goat Rock. There were not many there but so many Brown Pelicans. Everywhere we went! We also saw American (white) pelicans at Bodega Bay. Lots of birds in general.
We left the rig for 2 days to help Matt and Jenny move from Fremont to Santa Clara. The new rental is about a mile from the university with a nice wide bike path. Jenny plans to bike to school. Her new bike has a cute, LARGE, basket to carry whatever books she needs! Very cool. The house also has an amazing garden with multiple fruit trees, squash, green beans, sunflowers, different cucumbers etc. walled off from Max so they should live. They are also on a drip timer so Matt and Jenny can somewhat ignore it during the week! There were also 3 somewhat sad tomato plants in giant cages but they were pretty dry and crispy/droopy. Hopefully the organic treatment I gave them will help. Plus some more water!
Anyway, the trip was fun and relaxing as normal for the coast. We missed some very hot weather at home too. Nice. I will upgrade the pictures whenever Dave gets his updated!
