It has been a pretty consistently hot summer so far. Still mostly cooling down at night (yeah for a whole house fan) but we have had to run the A/C a couple nights. Dave had booked much of August as a get away for us, but knowing we wouldn’t get to go the whole month. And it turns out we picked the right week to leave the valley- several days 105F+ and warm nights. In HMB we had days in the 60F range and nights only 10 degrees Fahrenheit less. Not too cold at night and beautiful days. Had to wear a flannel shirt some mornings! The days were mostly overcast (typical summer at the No Cal coast) but we did get sunny break through most afternoons. It was sooooo nice!
The other very nice part of HMB is that it is flat and has many either paved or hard pack trails to go on. Since my knee is acting up so much these days ( I’m on month 7 waiting for the total knee replacement surgery) the flat and easy walking substrate is very important. So I don’t get to walk on the sand, but I definitely can walk to town and along the California Coastal Trail. Dave used my “elevating my leg” breaks to walk the beach.
It was nice to be able to do some distance (3 miles one day but usually a little more than 2 miles) and realize my leg wasn’t going to fall off. Or me wishing it might. Dave has learned to adjust to my speed, yes slow, and was quite patient with me. It helps that one of my favorite bakeries is in HMB and just over a mile from the campsite. Raspberry buttercreams. Yum…I do find it funny since I usually don’t care much for cake, but this one is buttery and raspberry’y and chocolate covered- yum! So it is quite a motivator for me. And Sam’s has great clam chowder and fried calamari and fish so we drove part way and then walked along the coastal trail. Awesome!
We didn’t get many pictures since we spent a lot of time playing games, and just communing with the beach. Or napping. Or just relaxing. It was quite therapeutic for us both to get away from the kids, but man did we miss them so much! Ok yes, also the chickens! And the gardens! Happy to be home and back to life and it seems that we did indeed bring some cooler weather with us!
