The time has arrived! We have 2 hens now laying and 4 we are still waiting on! It is so much fun right now to go and see who has laid eggs today. Gabe loves to go out and feed, and try to touch the hens!

The first egg came on 2/17 and was medium sized (!) and pretty evenly tan. It had a couple freckles. I wasn’t sure if it was from Charlotte, who seems the most advanced with her comb and wattles, or Hermione (Hermie) who also seemed behaviorally more advanced (squatting and just being almost clingy). Should have figured out it was Hermie by the super light coloration of the egg. It matches her leg color! She had a couple more on the every other day schedule and after the third egg became daily. All very light tan. The first two were in the grass and then we put nesting material in the nesting boxes and that is where they are laid now. Matt also caught her in the nest which helped us accept it is Hermie.

At this point we weren’t sure if it was Hermie or Charlotte

Then on 2/23 there were two eggs. The second is a pretty solid light green, fairly small, and absolutely matches Enola’s leg coloration. She also kept going into the nesting box and making the same soft chirping Hermie was making. It’s a pretty obvious thing now that I think about it. She also laid again today which is unusual for beginning hens. The eggs have all been good and solid. It is very exciting!
