The bad air has really slowed down growth in the garden it seems. I now have 3 squash at different stages of growth, 3 cantaloupe and five watermelons. I haven’t had a watermelon flower in a while however. Only one squash flower opens a day (5 plants!) so I don’t know if we will get any more actual squash. Those are sure pretty flowers!

This huntsman spider was very protective of its squash leaf today!

I have started growing some potatoes and 5 plants have sprouted up. I will try planting three more tomorrow after I return from Fremont. If the weather stays warm they will grow; if it gets cold and we have an actual winter, they won’t. I have to admit, I hope they die off because it gets rainy! We still get few green beans because the rat seems to like them smaller than I do! About 7-8 a day but there are sooo many little ones. The upper corn cobs are starting to really fill out but I am not sure they will ripen before we leave. Too bad! The little corns were tasty but seeing as this is my favorite crop, it is another bummer year.

This is one of several preying manti in the garden.

I see lots of lizards and various bugs in the garden, but still few bees. I think that may be a project to try and figure out for next year. The butterflies come by a lot too, and drink from the bird bath. I keep it at an angle so they can walk up to the edge of the water. The flowers are enjoying the cooler weather I think. The smoke is thick enough to drop the temperature almost 20 degrees. It is harder to enjoy working in the garden when not only do I have to mask, I have to wear a KN95 mask for the air quality. It makes me sweat. But protects the lungs so there is that! I hope you enjoyed reading this! Have a great rest of the week!

The sunflowers are starting to finally bloom but many are too heavy for their stalk!
