Our first trip since I have retired was by car – specifically our new red Ford Escape hybrid. It is fully flat towable behind King Tut, our RV. Anyway, this trip was in Little Red to go and visit with Cherie and make a quick visit at the Grand Canyon. Cherie is currently midway through her second clinical at the Whiteriver Indian Health hospital on the Whiteriver Apache reservation. That is near Pinetop, Arizona in the mountains somewhere in the middle of the state.

Let me start off by saying it was hot – crazy hot and the Grand Canyon was packed! I thought we were crazy people to go in July but we were using Cherie’s schedule. So like we always do, we just went very early. Packed our breakfast and we’re on the bus by 5:30 am. On and off with Dave taking lots of pictures! As we headed back to the visitor center at 9:00 am, we could see the packed buses headed out. On Sunday, we were up for the sunrise at Mather Point with a whole lot of people who were also nuts!

As we left the Grand Canyon we went the long way back to Pinetop. We stopped at the Wupatki National Monument and walked to the Pueblo buildings. As far as we could in the extreme heat! The on to the Sunset Crater lava fields. And finally dinner with Cherie’s roommate from Emory, Bridget. Then off to return home!
